Home Education sessions for 2016/17

Book a place on one of our special workshop days for home-educated students.

Call 0207 563 9551 or email learning@wallacecollection.org to make a booking.

Please note:

  • For full-day workshops, a lunch space will be provided
  • Parents/carers are welcome to accompany pupils to the workshops, but only children of the specified age will be permitted – children of other ages must be taken elsewhere, and you can explore the galleries at leisure with trails and armour to try on.
  • Sessions are free, but a £10 per child deposit will be taken upon booking, and refunded upon attendance of the workshop. Cancellation with less than 14 days’ notice will mean a refund is forfeit.
  • For workshops that involve messy materials, accompanying adults will be expected to assist.

31st October 2016

Islamic Patterns: Geometric, Biomorphic and Calligraphic Design

11am-3pm

For ages 11 – 16

Working with an artist trained in the Islamic tradition and inspired by our Oriental Armoury, you will create tessellating patterns using a compass and watercolours.

 

My First Visit

11am-12.30pm

For ages 5 – 10

In this fun session for our younger visitors, pupils will try on replica armour, and talk about and draw from the works of art.

 

Portraiture

1.30pm-3pm

For ages 5-10

Explore portraits by Old Masters. Look at how children and adults have been painted over the centuries, try on replica costumes and pose like the sitters. Work with an artist to learn the basic principles of drawing a face.

FULLY BOOKED – Investigating Patterns: Printmaking Workshop

11am-1pm

For ages 7 – 13

Explore the many different patterns which decorate the beautiful furniture, staircase, ceilings and floors of this palatial home and make your own print designs. Involves messy materials.

 

FULLY BOOKED – Sketching in the Galleries 

2pm-3pm

For ages 7 – 13

Enjoy exploring the galleries with an artist and be inspired by the artworks to learn new techniques to create a series of drawings. Bring along your own sketchbook.


30th March 2017

Watercolour Workshop

11am-3pm

For ages 11 – 16

Learn six watercolour techniques with an artist to create a landscape painting.

 

Knight or Footsoldier? A Hands-On Armour Handling Session

11am-12.30pm

For ages 6 – 11

Discover how different ranks, from knights to the lowest footsoldier protected themselves in battle. Investigate the purpose, materials, production and styles of armour through handling and trying on.

 

Classical Myths: Gods, Heroes and Monsters

1.30pm-3pm

For ages 6 – 11

Come face-to-face with Hercules, Perseus and Apollo, characters from ancient Greek and Roman myths whose stories are told in paintings, sculptures, furniture and ceramics.


5th June 2017

Choose Your Words: Inspiration for Creative Writing

11am-1pm

For ages 7 – 11

Children will explore this magnificent treasure house with a published children’s author.

Self-guided visits

Available subject to availability, booking compulsory. Please email booking@wallacecollection.org to book.

Weekdays afternoons and Fridays are the best time to come on a self-guided tour of the Wallace Collection.

Please note that groups of children younger than 14 cannot exceed 15 in number, and must be supervised by adults at all times. All other groups are limited to 25.
